With the support of Google, Eastern Gateway has developed a low-cost, cutting-edge Information Technology degree, which is offered at a relatively low cost to OCSEA members and their families. This degree will save families thousands of dollars for a degree in this fast-growing field and prepare them for high-demand jobs in IT. 

This discounted IT program is available to dues-paying OCSEA union members and qualifying family members including child (or step-child), grandchild (or step-grandchild), spouse, financial dependent, niece, nephew, parent, sibling, aunt, uncle or in-law.

Listed below are the Eastern Gateway Community College degree programs available at a low cost to OCSEA members and extended families. The following are additional EGCC programs that are not fully covered by the OCSEA Free College program. While a scholarship will be applied for tuition and resource fees, students will be responsible for some content costs. Please note: The tuition and fees charged by Eastern Gateway ARE covered, however, industry-required materials are NOT covered under the Free College program because of strict industry-requirements. Medical Scribe Specialist

HA medical scribe is trained to be in the room with the doctor and patients and create real time medical records during the visit. Scribes work in various settings such as emergency departments, small to medium doctors’ offices, and other facilities. They possess the appropriate knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, billing/coding/ reimbursement, electronic health records, quality improvement principles, legal privacy/security of protected health information in order to provide entry-level assistance to physicians. Students who complete this certificate may continue with the Medical Coding Certificate and/or Health Information Management degree programs (see below).

Please note: Tuition and fees for this program are covered through OCSEA’s Free College program. However, industry-required materials are not covered under the Free College program. Students wanting to enroll in this program should expect to pay approximately $1,000 total for the course materials for the entire program. Students will responsible for the cost of the materials on a per-course basis. There may be assistance available for students in need. Free College will not cover required background checks or licensing fees.

Medical Coding Specialist

The Medical Coding Specialist Certificate of Completion, along with relevant work experience, prepares students to take the certification examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association to become a Certified Coding Associate (CCA). After further experience they may apply to become a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). This program mirrors the first two semesters of the Health Information Management degree. Students who complete this certificate may continue on with the Health Information Management degree (see below).

Health Information Management

Health Information Management is the processing of patient’s electronic health records. This program prepares the student for a variety of job opportunities including medical coder, department manager/supervisor, data analyst, and clerks who process records verifying accuracy and completeness. It blends knowledge and skills from health information and business management, with computer applications and medicine to provide the necessary foundation for success. The student will be eligible to sit for the RHIT certification upon successful completion of the program.

Students can complete the Health Information Management program in as little as 21 months and will come away with the opportunity to fulfill two certificates. This online class provides support through online computer classes and peer support.

Central Service Technician

Central Service Technicians are in huge demand in today’s healthcare industry. These technicians are responsible for the care of medical equipment and instruments. Their duties in caring for these instruments include decontaminating, cleaning, sanitizing, assembling, organizing and storing.

EGCC's Central Service Technician program is two semesters long and is made up of online classes and hands-on training through clinical experience. One course is designed specifically to prepare you for your national certification exam. Upon graduation, you will be certification eligible and ready to take the national certification through IAHSCMM. EGCC will assist you in completion of the application process. Graduates have gained employment as surgical technologists and medical equipment preparers.

Students wanting to enroll in this program should expect to pay approximately $250 for the course materials for the entire program. Students will be responsible for the cost of the materials at the beginning of their program and the materials will be utilized for the entire course. There may be assistance available for students in need.
